What's a Music Video?

You've all seen music videos. On the music channel, downloaded off of MTV.com, whatever. The music videos here are different, though.

These videos are created by fans. And all we use is our computer, and sometimes, our video capture card. We take scenes from our favorite shows and put them alongside music of our choice. The show of choice here is Dragonball Z, but there can be music videos for just about anything, as long as there are fans willing to make them.

*thinks to self* I wonder if anyone makes music videos for Buffy and Angel?

Errr... anyway, the result of all this meddling around with audio and video can vary from okay to excellent. Music videos can be extremely entertaining. ^_^ I myself have found a music video that I love so much, I just can't help seeing it over and over.

Music videos are, once finished in the editing phase, translated into a smaller and easier to download format. Popular formats are RealMedia (.rm or .ram), Mpeg (.mpg or .mpeg), Windows Streaming Media (.asf or .asx), and Quicktime (.mov or .qt).

Those formats all need different players, but I recommend downloading Windows Media Player to handle the Mpeg, Quicktime, and Windows formats, and RealPlayer to handle the RealMedia formats. Both players will automatically upgrade via the net when they need to. My preferred format is RealMedia, but get Windows Media Player as well in case you run into a music video that's not RealMedia.

With those two programs, you should be more than ready to watch any music video that comes your way, but what about downloading them? Some music videos (like my "The Call of Ktulu") have MASSIVE file sizes, and you might not have the time to download the whole thing at once. So what are you going to do?

Download Getright, that's what! Getright is a cool download program that can pause and resume downloads. So you can download half of the file one day, and the second half the next! This program is one of the most useful ones I've come across. You can use it for downloading anything, not just music videos!

Now you are ready to... wait! There's one more. Winzip is a program you might be needing. Some people "zip" their music videos before uploading them to the net. You can tell if a file is Zipped because of its .zip filename extension. Winzip will unzip the file for you, so you can watch it.

There! Now you are ready to enter the music video world! There's a heck of a lot of music videos out there to see, so what are you waiting for?

Wow! I can't believe you actually read all that! ^_^
